Tremonton, UT- Ten Utah State University students and their instructor were involved in a tragic car accident this afternoon. Seven were declared dead at the scene, and four were flown to neighboring hospitals, there condition is unknown.
Although the cause of the accident is not known yet a Utah Highway Patrol Lieutenant Jason Jensen was at the scene minutes after that accident occurred and told us, "if I were to guess the cause of the accident, based on my 11 years of experience on the force, I would say that the speed the car was traveling played a major role."
Noel Cockett, Dean of Agriculture said, "These were a great group of students, one of the best groups we've ever had. This is a huge loss."

Practice News Story 10: Investigative

Logan, Utah- Ted Turner and Bill and Melinda Gates were seen in Abuja, Nigeria today getting off a plane together to meet with local African officials. The mayor, Malik Ok, tells us that there has been an agreement made with several foundations, including Turner and Gates foundations, to fund the building of several education buildings throughout Africa. The mayor tells us that they have a ten year plan to get these education buildings up and running by local people. They simply need the funding in order to get it started. Local people will build them and workshops will be given with an emphasis on health. The mayor tells us that people are dying simply because they are not educated on proper health practices. They want to raise awareness and stop these unnecessary deaths from occurring. The goal of this project is to teach people how to support themselves.

Palo Alto, California- Today Google Inc. (GOOG) made a hostile takeover bid of $60 billion to purchase Time Warner Inc. (TMX) Dr. Eric Schmidt, CEO and chairman of Google, explained that his company is trying to move more into content distribution and he thinks that buying out Time Warner will do that for his company. Richard D. Parsons, CEO of Time Warner, says they haven't met with the board yet to even discuss a buyout, they have talked about a possible merger, but this will not be a quick decision to make. Industry analyst Paul Kim says that it would be foolish of Time Warner not to accept the bid.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania- This afternoon President Lincoln dedicated the Soldiers' National Cemetary in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. It is to honor the courageous men who fought in the battle of Gettysburg, one of the biggest battles of this war to date. The president inspired everyone who attended with hope for freedom and the end of the war. His speech was just over two minutes long, but his words were profound. The president ended his speech with these words that should inspire everyone, "this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
In an interview with the president after the dedication he said, " This speech was inspired by the almighty God. As long as we are a God fearing nation we will continue, this nation will not perish and we can continue furthering God’s will." The president did not want the men who died in this battle to have died in vain. He stated, "I believe in the unity of the nation."

Practice News Story 5: Obituary

Lance Armstrong 1971-2007
Lance Armstrong died yesterday, October 3rd, at the young age of 36. He was attempting a new land speed record on a bike in Bonneville Utah at the salt flats. He was half way through the ride when suddenly he fell over. The cause of his death is still unknown.
Armstrong was a cancer survivor and champion of the Tour de France seven years in a row. His incredible strength and abilities were so unbelievable that he was drug tested several times even though no evidence of drugs was ever found. I doubt there will ever be another athlete with his strenth and endurance.
Armstrong was survived by his mother Linda, ex-wife Kristin, and his three children Luke Isabelle, and Grace. Funeral services will be held in his home town of Austin Texas later in the week.

Logan Man on Trial for Felony Burglary Charges
Logan, Utah- A preliminary hearing took place today in which a 35 year old Logan resident was charged with two misdemeanor counts of vandalism and breaking and entering, also a felony charge of burglary. The man, James Michaels, was arrested on September 19th after police received several tips incriminating Michaels as well as a juvenile, whose name is not being released. The break in that they are being accused of occurred on September 19th in a Logan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse. Two CPU’s were stolen and vandalism occurred. There was fingerprint evidence at the scene and a K9 unit was released and brought officers to the neighborhood of the accused. The District Attorney, Noel Mayfield, claims that there is enough evidence to go through to a trial. Defense Attorney, Robbie Cochran, claims, "My client is innocent." Court date is set for October 21, 2007.

Practice News Story 3: Break in at LDS Church
Yesterday in the early morning a Logan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house was broken into and vandalized. Sheriff Deputy Geoffrey Hasty says they estimate the break in was between 2 and 4 a.m. They have two individuals that are of interest and are currently being questioned. Fingerprints and other evidence was found.They entered the building through a window that was left unlocked and two CPU's were taken. They estimate the loss to be about $700. It is not a common occurrence in Logan, neighbors of the building say that nothing like this has ever happened there before. It's usually such a safe place to live. Authorities do not think that this was an act of religious discrimination, they believe it was just an act of desperation.

Practice News Story 2: Fire
A fire broke out yesterday leaving a local Ogden building in ruins. A local man named Pedro Sanchez and his family are left homeless and their restaurant destroyed. Pedro’s Mexican restaurant on the ground floor is where the fire originated and soon spread to the apartment upstairs where Pedro’s family was. Fortunately no serious injuries occurred. Only five people were in the building at the time of the fire and everyone was able to evacuate before any real damage occurred. Now they are left with the aftermath and no where to go. Rachel Calhoun, owner of the building, says they will rebuild.
Deputy Fire Chief Greg Chamberlain was one of the first firefighters to respond to the scene. They were able to put the fire out in under an hour and make sure everyone in the building was taken to neighboring hospitals for medical treatment. Chamberlain said, "I’m just glad we got everyone out safely, the building was a loss, but human life is what is most important. It was a success."

Practice News Story 1: Accident
A school field trip turned into a tragic loss for everyone at Utah State University yesterday when eleven fellow classmates were involved in a car accident that took the lives of eight and left three in critical condition. Utah Highway patrol officer Jason Jensen was first to respond to the scene of the accident. He stated that no other cars were involved in the accident, preliminary investigations showed that there was a mechanical difficulty with the vehicle which caused the driver to loose control. The car rolled three to four times on its side before stopping. Stan Albrecht, President of Utah State University, is calling this "a great tragedy for the university." There will be a memorial service for the victims so that the school and the community can pay their respects.
